Iliad and OdysseyThe OdysseyThe story of the Odyssey starts ten years after the war of Troy has ended. After the war Odysseus has wandered around trying to get to his home island Ithaca. He and his men end up in incredible adventures, where men and gods have their role to play. Through incredible adventure that last ten years, Odysseus ends up on the island of Scheria. He has lost all his ships and his men in the adversities he has encountered. On Scheria he is brought to the king who promises to help him get home if he first tells about his travels. These stories about Odysseus’s journey at sea gives us indication of the route he took, where the islands he visited were and what their topography was like. Odysseus returns to Ithaca disguised as a beggar. He reveals his true identity at a contest which Penelope had organized under pressure from ther suitors to choose her future spouse. With the help of his son and some faithful servants Odysseus manages to kill the suitors and regain his position in Ithaca and his family. |
